helen2016 Helen McLachlan

Our Rapporteur for the break-out session on Marine and Fisheries is Helen McLachlan, Fisheries Governance Programme Manager WWF UK / Scottish Environment LINK Marine Group.

Helen grew up on the Scotland’s west coast, the place to which she attributes her love for all things marine.  She studied Zoology and Marine Fisheries as a first degree and went on to study a Masters in Marine Environmental Protection at Bangor University.

Helen spent a number of years with the Royal Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) where she worked on a broad range of fisheries and marine mammal related issues.  She then lived and worked in Sweden working on ways of mitigating small cetacean entanglement in North Sea and Baltic fisheries.  She has worked within WWFs marine programme for twelve years, starting out in WWF Scotland covering Scottish marine and fisheries policy, and later being seconded to WWF’s European Policy Office in Brussels for a three year period to work on the 2009-2013 reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).  Through WWF she engages with fisheries stakeholders from all parts of the supply chain.  She is based in Edinburgh working within the UK marine team where she leads the fisheries governance work and works closely with seafood colleagues to help deliver WWFs goal for fisheries to be managed sustainably for future fish stocks, the people that rely on them and the wider marine environment.  Helen is a member of Marine Scotland’s Fisheries Management and Conservation Group (FMAC) and sits on the Technical Advisory Committee of Fisheries Innovation Scotland.  She also chairs the policy group of fisheries and marine NGOs working under the banner of Greener UK, a coalition of UK environmental groups advocating for world leading UK fisheries management beyond Brexit.
